Arnica needs to be approached with respect and caution – do not attempt to use it without the guidance of a pharmacist or healthcare professional.
Native to the Alpine valleys throughout Europe, Arnica montana is a plant as famous as it is notorious, with a history dating as far back as the 16th century. It has been used as a folk remedy for skin issues in Germany since that time, and even the poet Goethe was known to have taken Arnica regularly for a heart condition. (How he survived is cause for debate – Arnica can be poisonous if taken internally!) Like its sibling the sunflower, Arnica blooms in a bold yellow and is a member of the Asteraceae family.
