Amongst the transcendental woods of the 1800s, craftsmen from the Massachusetts Bay Colony built violin bows in the tiny towns of the Pioneer Valley. The shops were filled with old growth mahogany, burled maple shavings, amber pine rosin, aged walnut and the craftsmen’s unique, secret varnishes. An androgynous, full bodied scent, Bowmaker’s ether-ozonic reek is softened by the rich textures of supple, dark leather and a variety of woods. Violin-varnish is a molten aromatic, the prismatic glue that holds this scent together. Mahogany is a cherry-brown substance, a dense and fine-grained material that constitutes the spine of these taut instruments. In this busy, intimate studio a fresh breeze blows in from the cool Massachusetts woods, the crystalline sweetness of sap carried indoors mirroring the warm, dusty solidity of sparkling rosin. Maplewood is dry and sturdy, as cool as the piney, slightly fruity qualities of cypress. Spiced tree resin is an elegant finishing touch, a synthesis of all the different woods herein. Cedar’s smoke mimics the burn of bowstrings rubbed into sound, while moss recreates the earthy smell of an instrument fusing into the body of a musician. Bowmakers is a quietly accomplished fragrance, a thing of humble yet remarkable beauty, a detailed exemplar of artisanal craftsmanship.
