In 1891, a fire breaks out in the Curling Brother’s Barbershop in Westlake, N.Y. The shaving tonics (spearmint, lime, vanilla, and lavender) all burn. A charred bottle is found half-full: it smells like this. Burning Barbershop is a masculine, full bodied, fougere, as smoky as it is floral and sweet. Spearmint and lime create a lightweight, refreshing top, engraved upon by the darker linearity of bitter hemlock spruce. Lavender absolute constitutes one half of the floral heart of this fragrance, contributing a rounded, slightly dusty texture that casts a glows like a dusky, twilight moon. Turkish rose is a cleansing yet warm presence, it’s satin, soapy texture an expression of the becalmed state that results from standing in lavender’s moonlight. Burnt oil intermittently dominates this scent, but its toxic, addictive fragrance is never overwhelming; the foliage and flora that precede this heavy note create context for and relief from the smudged shadow issuing from this charred character. Vanilla and hay are deliberate, prudent measures that augment the softer aspects of this scent while balancing the eponymous burn. Burning Barbershop crackles and sizzles on skin, a slow, pleasurable, olfactive spectacle that is as captivating as it is comforting. A classic fougere set alight, this scent is an indisputably modern take on a favorite of yore. Notes: spearmint, lime, hemlock spruce, lavender absolute, turkish rose, burnt oil, vanilla, hay.
