At the age of nineteen Nica Galas published her first book, the autobiographical tome Falling into the Sea which chronicled her short and torrid love affair among the hot beaches and lemon trees in the Gulf of Naples. The breathtaking story opens with Nica and her girlfriends picking bunches of jasmine flower for boys while they cliff-jumped into the sea. An innocent first kiss erupts into an ardent summer entanglement which is cut short one moonlit night when her lover leaps into the dark abyss never to surface, leaving Nica naked on the cliffs screaming his name. Still, this scent reflects not only the happiness of Nica’s first romance, as warm and sun-kissed as young skins intertwined at the waves edge, but an optimistic determination to remember what is lost or can no longer be attained by reveling in the power of fond memory. Lemon is a pure, pristine pop of acid, a terse, slightly floral energy that sings in a high soprano next to bergamot’s jammier, zingy mezzo. Grapefruit is definitively alto and full of minor scale dynamism and spicy nuance. Lychee is another kind of fruit altogether. Reminiscent of edible perfume, the fragrant, delectably sweet lychee flesh is tender and rosy, reminiscent of Nica’s innocence and youth.
