Astragalus Root (Astragalus memranaceus) aka Milkvetch, or perhaps more famously Huang qi, which translates from Chinese to “yellow leader”. Astragalus could have earned this name from the yellow colored roots for which it is harvested, but more likely, it’s a reference to the herb’s revered status in China.
Astragalus root has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years to support the immune system and overall vital energy, and is still regarded as one of the 50 fundamental herbs of that practice. Astragalus is an herbaceous perennial plant of the Fabaceae, or pea family, native to China, Mongolia and North Korea.
Astragalus root has an earthy and slightly bittersweet flavor. It can be tinctured, decocted as tea, and even added to soups and stews for a nutritious and fortifying boost to overall health.
