Oatstraw – (Avena sativa) is an annual grass of the family Poaceae, that has covered much of the globe for millenia. It famously thrives in poor soil, is nutritious for humans and animals, and abundant wherever it grows. Because of this, it has been a longtime essential companion to human civilization, as a grain for cereal and flour as well as hay for animals. Scientists can date its cultivation and consumption all the way back to 2000 BCE, making it one of the earliest food crops on record. Oat grasses have hollow stems, can grow up to 5 feet tall, have long, bluish leaves and light green flowering tops. They are wonderfully adept at regenerating soils, replenishing nutrients for future growth. This quality makes Oatstraw very rich in nutrients, notably calcium and magnesium, but many other essential vitamins and minerals too.
